Meet the expert

Join Dr Michael Aicken in his comprehensive certification course for Doctors, Dentists and Nurses in the use of anti-wrinkle and filler treatments. Dr Aicken will teach the clinical content and procedures, as well as providing business support. This includes a free trial on our Flourish App. At Visage Aesthetics we pride ourselves on our performance and skills, which give us our impeccable reputation. Dr Michael Aicken offers unlimited support following the completion, to ensure you continue to succeed and grow your aesthetics career.

All of our courses are delivered by Dr Michael David Aicken, one of the UK’s leading aesthetic trainers. He has over 14 years’ experience within medical aesthetics and has published teaching material in various aesthetic journals. After completing an MPhil at Queens University Belfast — where he gained expertise in the development of medical education assessment methods — he has spent the last nine years teaching practitioners from all over the world. Dr Aicken regularly provides support and guidance to practitioners dealing with complications within their own clinics. In addition he teaches his diploma and masterclasses courses, and running his own private clinic. This is your opportunity to learn from one of the most respected members of the medical aesthetic community.

What will the practical assessment cover?

At the beginning of day 2, each trainee will complete a formal assessment. This covers each of the case studies presented in the online courses. In the afternoon, feedback given during the group teaching session will be informal. This will involve every member of the group taking part in performing each treatment in rotation under the close supervision of our trainer.

Trainees will have a chance to complete all “basic” treatments for two models. In addition to most of the advanced treatments for one model. The models vary from course to course, so on some occasions it is not possible to treat every advanced area; however, if this occurs, a thorough explanation of the treatment will be provided. It is important to note that trainees will learn skills which will be applicable to many different areas of the face. Our previous trainees ALL report feeling confident to begin injecting independently following the course; it is, however, strongly advised that trainees begin doing so within one month of completion to consolidate their skills.

Our course is insurance approved — please arrange this in advance. Then on completing the certification, you will be able to offer injectable dermal filler to expand your business offering to your clients.

Recently there has been a lot of media coverage, interest and speculation regarding the regulation of all those who practice non-surgical aesthetics. At Visage Academy, we train all individuals that meet the criteria for Aesthetic Insurance and ensure that they are trained and assessed in line with Health Education England guidelines. Since 2014, we have also included comprehensive training in complications management; something I’m pleased to say that some other training academies have since included in their courses. Although our trainees come from a variety of professions and therefore have varying training requirements, we treat all of our students with the same level of respect and provide them with ongoing support. Our aim is to train all of our students to be safe practitioners who can recognise complications and manage them responsibly and effectively.

Myself and Visage Academy wholeheartedly support moves to regulate the non-surgical aesthetics industry, but believe this should incorporate an inclusive register that seeks to support all safe practitioners, regardless of their entry route into the specialty. Excluding one or more groups from such regulation can only undermine patient safety and cannot be justified with the logical fallacy that certain groups are ‘not well enough trained already to be trained now’.

There are bad practitioners in aesthetics on both sides of the fence and we need to have a robust system to deal with these practitioners medic or non-medic, swiftly and in a manner that enhances public confidence in our profession.

I will continue to work with colleagues and welcome engagement from any other interested parties who share my viewpoint to make aesthetics a safer, more regulated environment and to eliminate bad practices regardless of occupational background.

Day 2 – Face-to-face

Assessment of Foundation-level & Advanced-level practical & communication skills using mannequins (3 Foundation-level filler cases & 3 Advanced-level filler cases) in the morning. Followed by an afternoon small group teaching session with real patients in a simulated clinic. In the afternoon, trainees will receive additional assessment and feedback on their practical skills. This will be in a more group-orientated and informal manner than the morning session.

The assessments (both formal and informal) will form part of the trainee’s self-managed log-book. Following the new guidelines, trainees are expected to observe 10 filler treatments and be observed performing 10 filler treatments. Our face-to-face assessments using mannequins will allow trainees the opportunity to record their first cases in their log-book. The afternoon session should allow further opportunities for logging cases. This is done either using our e-portfolio (found at www.cosmeticappraisal.com) or simply with pen and paper.

It’s really the insurance companies who make the rules as to what the eligibility criteria is as it’s them who will offer insurance to practitioners following training. For ‘non-medics’ we highly recommend speaking with Cathedral or Insync about insurance requirements before making an enquiry with us. Contact them as follows:

Tel: 01892 601198 / 01892 601199 Email: [email protected]

Please let us know if there is a problem obtaining a quote from the insurers or an issue with their customer service at [email protected]

As a rule of thumb, they do typically accept the following groups:

  • Beauty Therapists with an NVQ 3 in Beauty Therapy // CIBTAC // CIDESCO, Dental Hygienists, Dental Therapists, Pharmacists, Paramedics, Physiotherapists, Dental Nurses (there is an additional course to be completed before our course – read about it here. It’s currently £270)
  • Certain other individuals – if you aren’t sure, best to check with one (or both) of the insurers above. Good luck, and hopefully we’ll meet you soon!
Disclaimer – please check with your insurance company before booking onto our course. Although we have good relations with all of the major insurance companies, the decision whether or not to provide indemnity cover for you post-training is outside of our control. The rationale for providing or not providing cover does change from time-to-time without warning.
